STRADA DELLA FORRA ROUTE - LAKE GARDA MOTORCYCLE ITINERARY

If you like scenic roads, the Strada della Forra on Lake Garda is definitely the motorbike ride for you. Straddling Lombardy and Veneto and well known internationally, the Strada della Forra in Tremosine (full name) rises in the heart of a kind of all-Italian "Grand Canyon", where the road and curves wind between cavities and caves excavated by the secular action of water. The perfect road for a sunny weekend in the saddle, also chosen by several car manufacturers in some commercials, from some footage of 007 and defined by Winston Churchill as "the eighth wonder of the world".

STRADA DELLA FORRA IN TREMOSINE: THE ROADSITALIA ROUTE

Tremosine is a municipality divided in several villages, overlooking Lake Garda in the province of Brescia. It can be reached from both the south and the north via the Gardesana state road (SS45Bis): on one side via Campione del Garda, or from Limone del Garda. Porto di Tremosine is our starting point, from where you take the clearly visible detour to Pieve. Thus you enter the SP38 - known by true motorcyclists as Strada della Forra - which continues uphill for about 6 km up to the hamlet of Pieve.

In this section you pass through the centuries-old rocks of the Val di Brasa, cross the Ponte Brasa (under which the river of the same name passes ..) and intersect the neighboring waterfalls. From Pieve, it is possible to lengthen a little the route and visit the splendid Terrazza del Brivido, a panoramic platform suspended in the void at 350 meters high, which offers spectacular views of both the lake and the mountains, and the Strada della Forra. The Thrill Terrace of Tremosine is owned by the Hotel Paradiso, but can be visited for free by accessing the hotel bar.

From here, return to the SP38 and continue for another 5 km towards Vesio, the second fraction of Tremosine, then continuing along the SP115 towards Limone, crossing several villages. The advantage of reaching Limone del Garda from this road, compared to the sister SS45Bis adjacent to the perimeter of the lake, are the majestic panoramic views from above that can be discovered as the motorbike grinds kilometers and the fact that it is generally a less busy road. Once in Limone, we recommend a stop on the Lungolago Marconi, full of bars, restaurants and shops and the junction point of the lakes navigation boats. From this position you can enjoy the vast panorama overlooking the Veronese shore of Garda, with Malcesine and Monte Baldo in the foreground. Obviously, the itinerary can also be followed in reverse, first taking the SP115 and then the SP38 towards Porto di Tremosine.

USEFUL ADVICE ON THE STRADA DELLA FORRA

Inaugurated in 1913 and created in the "gorge" of the Brasa stream, the Strada della Forra starts from 65m a.s.l. in Porto di Tremosine up to reach 626m in Vesio, passing through the approximately 420m a.s.l. of Pieve. The road is a succession of tight and sharp curves, dark tunnels and breathtaking landscapes between the mountains, set by the splendid setting of Lake Garda. It is therefore advisable to be very cautious and to keep well to the right due to the limited width of the carriageway.

Traveling along the Strada della Forra by motorbike in the evening at sunset is an equally suggestive experience. Now the sore points: Provincial Road 38 is currently closed due to instability since the end of December 2020 and despite the possibility of restoring it during the forced closures due to Covid19 and the many initiatives put in place to make it safe, unfortunately no one is able to give an effective reopening date.
