RESIA PASS BY MOTORCYCLE: DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF VAL VENOSTA ON TWO WHEELS
RESIA PASS BY MOTORCYCLE: DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF VAL VENOSTA ON TWO WHEELS
Trentino Alto Adige does not need great introductions and a motorcycle ride through the curves of the Resia Pass embodies all the beauty and essence of this Italian Alpine region. The road leading to the Resia Pass has very ancient origins and was already trodden even before the birth of the Roman Empire. It is a mountain border road, being a few kilometers from the Austrian border and from another well-known Swiss pass, the Umbrail pass. In short, a magnificent itinerary on two wheels immersed in the South Tyrolean and Tyrolean Alps, known by bikers for its immense beauty. The road that we will travel by motorbike to the Resia Pass crosses the municipality of Curon Venosta, on which Lake Resia lies. This artificial basin was inaugurated in the 1950s, although conceived in fascist era, it required the evacuation of an entire village for its construction (stopped only by the Second World War). Today only the bell tower remains of the old village - built as early as 300 and became the emblem of the valley - which emerges suggestively from the waters of Lake Resia in front of the town of Curon Venosta. Although its foundations are submerged, the building is well preserved. Are you ready then to get on the saddle and discover the charm of Trentino along the Resia Pass by motorbike?

RESIA PASS BY MOTORBIKE: THE ROADSITALIA ROUTE
Roadsitalia's motorbike itinerary on the Resia Pass starts from Merano, a typically South Tyrolean city known for its Spa and its Art Nouveau buildings. If you have never seen Merano, we strongly recommend that you visit it on foot in half a day, or stay here on your return from the Resia Pass. Deservedly called the pearl of South Tyrol, Merano has a particular charm that is immediately noticed, entering the ancient core of the village along the Via dei Portici. The combination of historic buildings and the high mountains in the background make Merano truly impressive, especially along the banks of the Passirio stream. From the Ponte della Posta that crosses it, various itineraries depart for the city, such as the famous Tappeiner promenade. Not to be missed - even just for a souvenir photo - are the Town Hall, the Venosta Gate, the Powder Tower, Castel San Zeno and the Prince's Castle. Leaving the center of Merano, we follow the SS38 proceeding to Naturno, then Coldrano and Spondigna. After passing the latter, we arrive in Malles Venosta (Mals) to take the SS40 and proceed in the direction of the lakes.

The route becomes more tortuous but pleasant, defined by hairpin bends and gentle uphill curves that give driving emotions and postcard views. In a few kilometers you will arrive at the first of the two basins, Lake San Valentino alla Muta, at about 1,450 meters above sea level. A popular excursion destination all year round, this natural lake is the shore of the imposing "King Ortles" together with the surrounding frozen mountains of the Ortles-Cevedale Group. Always continuing on the SS40, not even after a couple of subsequent curves Lake Resia appears in all its immense beauty. An almost fairytale-like place, the steeple of the submerged church will appear on the right, shortly after passing the middle of the eastern shore. The solitary building stands out not far from the shores, surrounded by a clear blue mirror of water. The mountains of Vallelunga (one of the wildest and most pristine valleys in the Alps) frame the artificial basin, together with the municipalities of Resia, Curon Venosta and the villages of Casone and Spin. The Resia Pass is less than a kilometer from the lake, straddling the Italian-Austrian border.

We arrived at the central stage of our motorbike tour of the Resia Pass. Before putting your helmet back on and do a U-turn , we suggest you stop for a typical and homemade meal in some neighboring farmhouse or mountain hut. Then, having taken the souvenir photos, retrace the same road in reverse perhaps stopping in Merano (if you have not already done so before ..), or visit the imposing Tirolo Castle nearby. Residence of the counts of Tirolo who gave its name to the entire region, it intertwines evident aspects of local history and sovereignty within the walls of the castle, while along the rampart fortress it offers an extraordinary glimpse of the Val d'Adige and Val Venosta.

RESIA PASS BY MOTORBIKE: ROADSITALIA TRAVEL TIPS
Starting from the Resia Pass, instead of returning to Merano, it is possible to undertake many surrounding motorbike itineraries that lead to the neighboring areas, between curves and landscapes to be framed. The most popular route is the Stelvio Pass which, with its 48 hairpin bends, leads to over 2,700 meters. Another alpine pass known by bikers is the Timmelsjoch (open only in summer), which offers a breathtaking panorama between steep climbs and sheer curves, for fearless centaurs with strong hearts! From a technical point of view, there are no particularly demanding sections, except for some sharp bends and hairpin bends rather tight. As always, no distractions and eyes on the road! And you?
